Alto and tenor saxophonist Alex Garnett is the special guest of Cardiff Jazz Society, on this night at 20.45.

When Dave Cliff won the BT Jazz Award for Guitar in 1998, in recognition of his invaluable contribution to British jazz, he formed a new collaboration with a young saxophonist, Alex Garnett, encouraged by the enthusiasm of a circle of young musicians. Unified in a mutual ardour for the music of Johnny Griffin and Wes Montgomery the new group made its debut at the 606 Club in Chelsea. Following several appearances throughout the country, the rocking quintet became a well-established band attracting praise from fans and musicians alike.

Alex Garnett (tenor sax) is a featured soloist with the Ray Gelato Giants and has just completed a world tour with them. He also features with Ray in the latter’s double tenor band Tough Tenors. He has made numerous TV appearances in the UK and across Europe and has been a special guest with Pete Long's Echoes of Ellington Orchestra.

The son of acclaimed British saxophonist Willie Garnett, Alex started learning the sax at an early age. Now in his mid 20s (his boyish looks have resulted in the nickname of “Young Man with the Horn”, or the “Young Son”) he has become a popular figure on the London jazz scene.

Equally popular on the Cardiff and Wales jazz scene, and further afield, is the superb rhythm team of pianist Brian Waite, Erika Lyons (double bass) and drummer John Gibbon backing Alex tonight.
